How to Make Homemade Vanilla Extract: A Simple Guide

There's something magical about homemade vanilla extract. It’s rich, fragrant, and far superior to store-bought versions. Plus, it makes a wonderful gift and adds a personal touch to your baking. The best part? It’s incredibly simple to make—just two ingredients and a little patience.

I had a bottle of vodka in my cabinet that my husband and I had one at a “bottle walk” at a work party. We don’t drink, so it was up in the cabinet just begging me make Homemade Vanilla!

Why Make Your Own Vanilla Extract?

Store-bought vanilla often contains artificial flavors or is diluted with additives. When you make it yourself, you get pure, high-quality vanilla that enhances everything from cookies to cakes. Homemade vanilla is also more cost-effective in the long run, as a single batch can last for years.

Ingredients:

  • Vanilla Beans – Choose high-quality beans, preferably Madagascar, Tahitian, or Mexican varieties. I used organic Madagascar Vanilla beans.

  • Alcohol – Vodka is the most common choice, as it has a neutral flavor. You can also use bourbon or rum for a unique twist. If you are making gluten-free vanilla, make sure to use a gluten-free alcohol.

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Vanilla Beans

Slice each vanilla bean lengthwise with a sharp knife, exposing the tiny seeds inside. This helps release their flavor. For a more intense vanilla extract, chop the beans into smaller pieces.

Step 2: Combine with Alcohol

Place the vanilla beans into a clean glass jar and cover them with alcohol. The general rule of thumb is 5–6 vanilla beans per cup (8 oz) of alcohol.

Step 3: Let It Infuse

Seal the jar tightly and store it in a cool, dark place. Shake it occasionally to ensure even infusion. Wait at least 8 weeks, but for the best flavor, let it infuse for 4–6 months. The longer it sits, the richer the flavor.

Step 4: Enjoy & Refill!

Once your vanilla extract is ready, use it in your favorite recipes. You can also top off the jar with more alcohol as you use the vanilla, extending its life indefinitely.

Tips for the Best Homemade Vanilla:

  • Use premium-grade vanilla beans for maximum flavor.

  • Store the extract in glass bottles to preserve freshness.

  • Keep it away from direct sunlight for optimal infusion.

  • Experiment with different types of alcohol for unique taste profiles.

Homemade vanilla extract is one of the easiest ways to elevate your baking and cooking. Give it a try, and soon you'll wonder how you ever lived without it!
